A police captain from George in the Southern Cape has been arrested on Friday, 18 March for allegedly tampering with a crime scene.
According to the Hawks’ spokesperson, Zinzi Hani, the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team arrested the high ranked officer after the team determined that he had removed evidence from the scene.
“A 53-year-old captain stationed at the Thembalethu police station removed evidence from a robbery that took place a the Puma petrol station in January.
“It is reported that on the day of the business robbery, a shootout ensued between the police and the suspects,” Hani said.

Hani went on to say that the captain is being held in custody and is scheduled to make his first appearance in the Thembalethu Magistrate Court on Tuesday, 21 March where he will face a charge of defeating the ends of justice.
Meanwhile, officers attached to the Anti-Corruption Unit have also arrested a police sergeant and two constables at the Lwandle police station on charges of corruption and defeating the administration of justice on Thursday,17 March.
According to police spokesperson FC Van Wyk, it is alleged that officers searched premises where dagga was found and asked the suspect to pay an amount of money in order not to be arrested.
“The members took three packets of dagga and left the rest with the suspect. They are due to appear in the Strand Magistrates court on Friday,” Van Wyk said.
