Police in Cape Town arrested ten suspects on Friday, 1 April, for various crimes committed in Maitland during an operation that focused on non-ferrous metal crime.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut, three suspects were arrested for the contravention of the Second Hand Goods Act, two for being undocumented citizens, two for the possession of drugs, two for possession of stolen copper wire and one for dealing in liquor.
“In addition, the operations also led to the confiscation of liquor and a variety of drugs, and 1500 litres of alcohol.
“With the aim on stolen copper cables and damage to infrastructure, the operation resulted in the seizure of various copper wires identified as City of Cape Town, Prasa and Transnet property,” Traut said.
Traut further indicated that all ten suspects will remain in custody until their court appearance in the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Monday, 4 April.
“The destruction of infrastructure and the theft of non-ferrous metal is high on our priority list of the Western Cape police and every endeavour will be made to apprehend those responsible so that they can face their day in a court of law,” Traut added.
