Metrorail in the Western Cape has advised commuters to make alternative arrangements as a number of power outages are affecting train operations.
According to Metrorail, Eskom has reported a number of power outages in various corridors feeding into Metrorail Substation.
“The power outages are affecting Metrorail train operations forcing the service to be halted. The cause is currently unknown, and Eskom technicians are looking into the faults,” Metrorail said.
Acting spokesperson, Nana Zenani, further indicated that the Cape Flats line, Southern line and the Nothern line will be affected.
“Eskom is looking into the issue and unfortunately we do not have an estimated time but we will continue to keep our commuters informed of the progress made,” Zenani added.
Meanwhile, Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula, told the national assembly on Wednesday, 4 May that the people who have erected shacks on railway lines in the Western Cape will soon be relocated.
According to Mbalula a piece of land has been identified and he will meet with the minister of human settlements to finalise preparations for the land that people will be relocated to.
“What we are doing as the passenger rail, particularly PRASA, is to continue with our work. If you go to Langa, you will see the work that we are doing to secure the rail network, while people are waiting to be resettled,” Mbalula said.
Mbalula added that his department will continue to work on securing the rail network.
“I can assure you that you are going to see the line opened very soon for trains, while people are resettled to a new piece of land in the Western Cape. We are working tirelessly to move people from rail tracks in the Western Cape,” he added.
