Apart from the 783 hectares of land that burned, no loss of life has been recorded, according to Overstrand Municipal Manager Dean O’Neill.
As of 7pm, there were four active fire lines: Division Bravo is on the Pringle Bay side of the mountain and Division Charlie is on the other side of the R44.
Carla Road, Ceaser Road, Edward Road, Lawrance Road and Stream Road are situated close to the active lines and all households were urged to remain vigilant.
Concerns were expressed that wind change could bring unpredictable fire behaviour, making for a challenging few days ahead.
‘120 firefighters, 30 vehicles and three helicopters are involved in firefighting efforts,’ said O’Neill. ‘There will be a reduced team on the ground tonight (Tuesday) and fresh teams will arrive tomorrow.’
Mayor Rabie praised the firefighters for doing a remarkable job despite the very trying conditions and encouraged residents to call the Fire & Rescue number, 028 312 2400 for further assistance should they need any.
They can also contact ward councillor Theresa Els, Mayor Rabie or Deputy Mayor Nstabo.
