A routine safety check resulted in City of Cape Town LEAP officers making an arrest while on patrol in Zwelitsha Drive, on Sunday, 23 July.
The suspects were in the middle of executing an ‘express kidnapping’, reported Alderman JP Smith in his latest Facebook post.

LEAP officers performed a routine safety check after observing a Ford Eco Sport acting suspiciously.
During the search, the occupants of the vehicle appeared nervous.
‘Officers then discovered an imitation firearm in the vehicle and a knife that appeared to be freshly stained with blood,’ said Smith.
An injured victim that had been badly assaulted was then found in the boot area.
All occupants of the Ford were arrested and taken to Nyanga police station.

The victim received medical attention and confirmed that he had been kidnapped earlier that evening.
‘Kidnapping and extortion continues to increase around South Africa, including that of “Express Kidnapping”,’ said Smith.
‘In such instances, victims are held under duress and threatened with violence until they have been forced to withdraw as much available funds from their bank account or gain access to other forms of valuables,’ he added.
