South Africa’s public health facilities welcomed 1708 healthy newborns on Christmas Day, a surge from the 1414 deliveries recorded in 2022, as confirmed by the Department of Health.
The number includes 840 baby boys and 868 baby girls. Gauteng led the count with 387 new arrivals, with significant contributions across provinces like Eastern Cape (221), KwaZulu-Natal (255) and Western Cape (231), among others.

The Department of Health expressed sincere congratulations to the dedicated health workers, specifically commending the invaluable efforts of midwives in ensuring safe and successful deliveries.
The department extended warm wishes to the parents, highlighting over 145 teen mothers.
