The videos will assist with documenting animal responses to the loud bangs for information-gathering purposes. Take a video 20 minutes before any fireworks activities and again during the discharge of fireworks.
To submit your video, contact the SPCA on 083 326 1604 or email [email protected].

The SPCA also provided some tips to comfort your pets during fireworks activities:
- Create a safe, secure place for them at home and away from windows or doors.
- Close curtains or blinds and put the TV or radio on to mask the sounds outside.
- Some dogs may need a good walk before the evening to help them feel calmer. Take them for a walk during the day, not in the evening when fireworks could go off.
- Provide them with enrichment as a positive distraction (a stuffed Kong, a yummy chewable treat or a big sinewy chew from your local vet or pet shop).
- Be there to comfort them and keep them reassured and feeling safe.
The SPCA’s resident animal behaviourist also notes the following:
- Update their ID: A collar with current info and microchipping ensures quick reunions if they wander off.
- Monitor the perimeter: With guests coming and going, keep an eye on exits to prevent accidental escapes.
- Fun activities: Busy with holiday chores? Keep your pets mentally stimulated with toys and treats.
- They don’t need to go to every event: Leave them safely at home with some fun mental enrichment.
- Prep for Fireworks: Help pets cope with loud sounds by creating a safe indoor space, masking noise with TV or radio, and offering comforting distractions.
- Remember that routine is key for their well-being.
