Western Cape police nabbed a 27-year-old man in possession of 5 200 pieces of abalone in Gansbaai on Sunday.

At around 3:45am, a suspicious vehicle was discovered speeding recklessly towards Hermanus. Although members of the Gansbaai police chased the white Isuzu LDV down, the driver refused to stop.
In response, Gansbaai police requested assistance from Hermanus SAPS, who forced the LDV to a halt on Seventh Street in Voëlklip. The driver was apprehended after he attempted to flee.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcom Pojie says 5 200 pieces of abalone were discovered in the vehicle. The value is yet to be determined. ‘The abalone and vehicle were seized as evidence.’
The suspect will appear in the Hermanus Magistrates’ Court once he has been charged with illegal possession of abalone, reckless and negligent driving, and attempted murder as he tried to push the vehicles off the road during the high-speed chase.
