Three people were gunned down and two others injured in a suspected gang-related incident in Mitchells Plain on Friday, 16 June 2023.

According to IOL, provincial police spokesperson Novela Potelwa reported that suspects entered a house in Poppy Street, Lentegeur, and fired multiple shots.
The victims, aged 14, 16 and 46, died on the scene, while two teenagers, aged 15 and 18, were transported to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigators from the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) responded to the scene, initiating a pursuit of the suspects, who had since fled.
‘As part of the investigation, the 26-year-old was apprehended. Two other suspects are still being sought. The shooting incident is believed to be gang-related,’ said Potelwa.
The AGU is currently investigating three cases of murder and two incidents of attempted murder.
In other news, in what seems to be an attack on police officers, criminals fatally shot two off-duty police officers and injured three other officers in unrelated incidents last week.
On Monday morning, 12 June 2023, a group of six criminals targeted a marked police vehicle at the Junxion Mall in Philippi. The attackers opened fire, resulting in three police constables, aged between 26 and 32, sustaining gunshot wounds.
The incident occurred after the suspects allegedly committed an armed robbery at a retail store. Escaping in a silver Opel LDV with false registration plates, the perpetrators remain at large as authorities continue their search.
A police sergeant from the Elsies River Police Station was gunned down in Khayelitsha’s Site C. An assailant approached the vehicle and fired multiple gunshots, resulting in the officer’s death.
Furthermore, in another incident that unfolded in Mandela Park, also located in Khayelitsha, another police sergeant was fatally shot while spending time with friends.
As of now, the suspects involved in both incidents remain at large, and no arrests have been made.
