A video of a shootout between rival gangs in Hanover Park on the Cape Flats is doing the rounds on social media.
In the video, captured by a resident on Sunday, 24 April, heavy gunfire can be heard while residents run for cover.
According to reports, a 22-year-old man was shot and wounded and is recovering in hospital. It is alleged that the sudden increase in gang violence comes after a former gang member from the area was gunned down in Lansdowne last Thursday.
The 23-year man was declared dead on the scene while a 25-year-old woman and a year-old baby were also wounded in the incident.

Meanwhile, the City of Cape Town’s Mayco Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said in a post on Facebook that the City has once again deployed increased resources to Hanover Park to assist SAPS in stabilizing the area.
“Our increased presence helps stabilize the communities until we rush off to the next community in battle. And so the cycle continues.
“This video is all the evidence needed. When these battles erupt, these communities line up to watch their “neighbours” go to battle. Over 51 shots were fired between these rival groups, in full view of the community,” Smith said.
