The Western Cape Police made a concerted effort to reduce the illegal possession of firearms and drugs in local communities – leading to several arrests over the past week.

While patrolling on Thursday, members of the Grassy Park police department saw two men walking in the road who, when they spotted the marked police vehicle, started running. The members immediately responded and gave chase, which resulted in a 9mm pistol found on their person. The men, aged 31 and 38, were arrested and detained for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
They are due to appear in the Wynberg Magistrates Court tomorrow.
On Wednesday, members of the Cape Town K9 Unit and Crime Intelligence responded to information pertaining to a suspicious parcel at a courier company in Railway Road, Montague Gardens.
Captain FC van Wyk says the teams deployed a narcotic detection dog, who reacted positively to narcotics. ‘Upon further inspection of the parcels, the members discovered that each parcel contained compress hydroponics dagga with a total weight of 4kg. The hydroponic dagga with an estimated value of R600 000 was confiscated. The narcotics were handed in at Milnerton SAPS as exhibits and an enquiry docket was opened. Investigations continue.’
In similar action, members of the Hermanus police department stopped a suspicious vehicle in the Zwehile area. ‘The vehicle was stopped and searched in Landa Street upon which the members found a rifle, a shotgun, ammunition and cellphones in the vehicle. Upon further investigation, it was found that the vehicle was hijacked in Lentegeur during April 2023. Three suspects between the ages of 22 and 27 were arrested on charges of possession of a hijacked vehicle as well as the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.’
The suspects were due to appear in the Hermanus Magistrates Court on Friday.
