It seems there’s no Christmas break for our brave firefighters as they take on a new large-scale vegetation fire in the Youngsfield military base of Wetton.

While the cause of the fire must still be established, City of Cape Town’s MMC for Safety and Security JP Smith says ‘fanned by the strong south-easter wind, it is not uncommon for burning embers to lift up and carry several kilometres before being deposited elsewhere causing additional ignition points downwind.’
‘We ask all residents (and visitors to our city this time of the year) to please exercise extra caution within these severely windy conditions,’ added Smith.
Eight fire engines are on scene, working to contain the fire. A Spotter plane is circling the area with two helicopters water bombing the dense vegetation.

The City of Cape Town advised that in addition to Prince George Drive being closed to public traffic as a result of low visibility on the Drive, Baden Powel has also been closed due to sand in the roadway.
‘This is expected to cause severe traffic disruptions to main routes within the southern suburbs,’ added the City.
The public is advised to please contact the Public Emergency Communications Centre on 021 480 7700 if any signs of fire at any location is observed.
‘Responding early to fires, even which my seem insignificant, is imperative during these conditions,’ concluded Smith.
