The cableway will be shut down from Monday, 15 July, to Sunday, 1 September 2024 and will reopen for public use on Monday, 2 September if the weather permits.
‘Our closure for such an extended time is in line with our maintenance schedule, in accordance with international standards,’ said TMAC management. ‘Aside from refurbishing our outlets and refreshing the look and feel of both the Top and Lower Stations, extensive work will be done on the cable cars and the ropes.’
Management added that these changes are necessary to ensure that TMAC can offer ‘an even better visitor experience’ when it reopens.
In addition to being a highly sought-after tourist attraction, the cableway attracts a plethora of locals too. Some are schoolchildren who go on excursions; others simply appreciate the views from atop one of the world’s ‘New7Wonders’ and some choose to celebrate their birthday with a free cable car ride.
But what if your birthday falls within TMAC’s annual maintenance period? Fear not; management says that you can still collect your free birthday ticket during the month of September. Simply bring your valid South African ID document, driver’s licence or birth certificate to prove it.

And what if you’ve purchased a Cable Card? Again, no stress. According to TMAC’s announcement, Cable Cards that are valid during its seven-week maintenance period will automatically be extended by seven weeks.
While the cable car and all TMAC’s facilities, including restrooms, eateries and shops, will all be closed during the maintenance period, if it’s simply the magnificent views from above of the Mother City, you are still more than welcome to hike up and down Table Mountain at your own risk.
In its announcement, TMAC management advised that those who wish to hike Table Mountain should do so with a registered guide.
Meanwhile, on the note of birthdays: If you’re a leap-day baby filled with the excitement of getting to celebrate your actual birthday on your actual birth date this year, TMAC is offering you four free tickets to be used for the month of February.
So, bring your ID documents to the lower station ticket office and claim your four free birthday tickets. Whether you’d like to take along three of your friends to celebrate above sea level or treat yourself to multiple free trips is totally up to you.
