Cape Town’s historic Greenmarket Square will become a meeting place for music, food and community on Thursday, 5 November, as the Mission for Inner City Cape Town marks its first anniversary with a free public concert, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The evening will feature acclaimed South African vocalist Zolani Mahola and The Feminine Force, alongside special guest Soana. The event runs from 18:00 to 22:00 and is open to the public, with families also welcome.
Originally scheduled for 3 September, the concert was postponed because of unfavourable weather. Organisers have now confirmed the new date, giving Capetonians another opportunity to experience one of the city centre’s best-known public spaces after hours.
The anniversary celebration comes as the Mission for Inner City Cape Town continues its efforts to encourage people to spend more time in the central city.
Rather than treating the inner city as somewhere to travel through on the way to another destination, the organisation wants residents to rediscover its public spaces, independent businesses, restaurants and cultural attractions.
Greenmarket Square, with its long history as a gathering place in Cape Town, provides the setting for that message. For the evening, the square will host live performances, food trucks and opportunities for visitors to sit down and enjoy the atmosphere.
The organisation describes its broader ambition as building a safer, more vibrant inner city that residents feel proud to call their own.
Zolani Mahola leads the entertainment line-up
Music will be at the centre of the anniversary event, with performances scheduled throughout the early evening. Soana will open the programme from 18:00 to 18:30, followed by Zolani Mahola and The Feminine Force from 18:45 to 19:45. Visitors will also be able to buy food from Holy Macaroni, Bigga D’s, Ardi’s and Herenity, which will have food trucks on site.
Tables and additional lighting supplied by Litehouse will provide seating for those who want to enjoy a meal while taking in the performances.
The concert coincides with First Thursdays, the monthly initiative that encourages people to explore Cape Town’s inner-city art galleries, shops and eateries during extended evening hours. The overlap allows visitors to combine the free concert with other activities in the city centre, potentially turning a single performance into a longer evening out.
For local businesses and cultural spaces, events that bring people into the area after hours can also help create opportunities for greater public engagement. The anniversary concert is free, and no ticket purchase is required according to the organisers’ announcement.
