MOYA with Simphiwe Dana – A soulful approach aimed at healing the nation on a spiritual level
Following sold-out performances in 2022 and 2023 in Johannesburg, singer-songwriter and social activist Simphiwe Dana brings two nights of MOYA to Cape Town this January.
‘MOYA was born out of a need for me to find peace and solace after losing my mother in 2021. This production has grown and touched not only me at my time of loss but the audience that has watched the show in the previous seasons,’ says Dana.
Steeped in spiritual intimacy, Dana aims to facilitate her audience through a mystical journey as she weaves her messages through a story told through a cappella and contemporary African dance, re-evaluating the relationship with the creator’s meaning and purpose in one’s life.
MOYA: Breath, air, spirit. The living essence inside all of life. Moya shows that the life force within us is mirrored outside. MOYA is the crux of the invocation in Enoch Sontonga’s masterful “Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika”.
Who would we be if we called on that spirit daily? – Lebo Mashile
‘As we journey together with my collaborators on this work we are looking to touch more and more people through the work by presenting the show in other cities. Join us for two nights as we deconstruct my catalogue and take it back to its a cappella routes,’ she adds.
Directed by prolific artistic director and choreographer Gregory Maqoma, MOYA will be staged with a creative infusion of contemporary African dance and movement by dynamic dancers of Vuyani Dance Theatre and music arranged by music sensation and maestro Banda Banda.
- Date: 26 to 27 January
- Duration: 180 minutes

A Cappella Musical Festival 2024
Back for its third edition, the A Cappella Musical Festival is a community-based initiative aiming to establish new forms of partnerships with youth and surrounding communities through music and entertainment making up for the loss of competitive art forms in townships, involving new faces and talent.
The festival is the brainchild of Rainbow Arts Organisation which was created in 2022 after seeing the consistency and drive of a cappella groups singing tirelessly for commuters who are travelling by taxis in different ranks around Cape Town.
The organisation realised a definite need for an annual platform to keep these musical groups going. This year, the festival will feature 12 a cappella musical groups consisting of between 10 and 20 singers on stage.
The 12 groups include Injongo Sweet Melodies, Unqulo, Khayelitsha Youth Choir, As One, Khayelitsha Harmonies, Brothers and Sisters Arts Organisation, Nalukhanyo Theatre Company, Amy Foundation, The New Voices, Injomane Arts Company, Thee Forest Sounds Arts Organisation and Amahlosi Cultural Music Entertainers.
- Date: 27 January
- Duration: 5 hours (15-minute intervals in between eliminations)
- Cost: R100
