According to the City of Cape Town, metro police department officers were en route to report at the shadow centre on the N2 this morning when they noticed four men in a scuffle at the shoulder of the on-ramp to Jakes Gerwel Drive.
When stopping, the officers saw that one of the men, who ‘bolted’ at the sight of them, was brandishing a firearm.
Following a chase, the suspect was caught and a Vector 9mm pistol loaded with 11 live rounds of ammunition was recovered.
At the scene of the scuffle, the officers discovered one man lying close by with multiple gunshot wounds and alerted paramedics.
The victim was treated and transported to a nearby hospital.
Upon inspection, the pistol still had its serial number despite a detected previous attempt to remove it, and was found to have been stolen from Mitchell’s Plain SAPS along with four other firearms in 2017.
The 20-year-old suspect from Bonteheuwel was detained at Manenberg and will be charged with attempted murder, armed robbery as well as the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
According to City’s MMC for safety and security JP Smith, City of Cape Town’s enforcement staff have already recovered a firearm for every day of the year so far.
‘Over the past 30 days, a total of 478 shooting incidents were recorded over just the four areas where Shotspotter has been installed: Manenberg, Hanover Park, Lavender Hill and Nyanga,’ said Smith.
City of Cape Town added that metro police made 54 arrests and issued 3 351 fines for various transgressions this week.
Traffic officers made 51 arrests of which 50 were for driving under the influence and one for reckless and negligent driving.
Law enforcement officers conducted 464 enforcement operations during which 234 suspects were arrested.
Residents are reminded to phone 021 480 7700 from a cell phone and 107 from a landline to report any criminal activity or emergency.
