We have seen the flying elephant, Dumbo, and what about the rat chef, Ratatouille – but have you heard of a painting pig? Unlike Dumbo or Ratatouille, the painting pig is no fairytale, although her story would be pretty amazing if it were a movie. Yes, you heard right, Cape Town has its very own painting pig and she is one fabulous and friendly swine.
In the heart of the Franschhoek Valley lives a talented bore, Pigcasso. When the owner of Farm Sanctuary (a rescue farm), Joanne Lesson, gave Pigcasso paint brushes to play with, never did she imagine that this young piggy, who was rescued from a slaughterhouse, would start a career in painting.
Pigcasso, who was brought to the farm when she was just a little piglet, was never interested in balls or toys, but she took to paint brushes immediately. Her paintings have sold for up to R400 000. If it’s too unreal to digest, go and see for yourself. Visitors are welcome to meet Pigcasso and her friends every Sunday at 12pm, or view some of her work on Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 2pm.
We visited the farm and met the saucy sow – she is every bit the diva we expected.
