A man who killed his step-great grandmother (93) in Bellville South was sentenced to an effective 20 years in prison by the Western Cape High Court last Wednesday, 1 May.
Keagan Samuels (27) confessed during a plea and sentencing agreement to attacking Cynthia Doubel at her home in July 2021, knowing it would kill her, as reported by TygerBurger via News24.

The attack started after Doubel resisted his attempts to stop her from leaving home while ‘not being dressed properly’, Samuels stated in his plea agreement.
A physical struggle ensued, which angered Samuels, and he physically assaulted her. She fell on the floor, and he picked her up and carried her to bed, where he left her.
When his two brothers arrived home, Samuels forbade his younger brother from giving her water because she had some next to her bed.
After he started yelling and screaming again from being ‘riled up’ and hitting the cupboard, he left the house to visit someone in Delft. When he returned, a coroner was at the premises and a neighbour told him that Doubel had died.
His father told him to hand himself over to the police, to which Samuels complied.
‘The parties agreed to the sentence as Samuels displayed genuine remorse for his actions by handing himself over to the police, and that he was capable of rehabilitation,’ said the National Prosecuting Authority’s Eric Ntabazalila.
‘The parties also agreed that a lengthy period of direct imprisonment would assist in reaching the objectives of the sentencing,’ Ntabazalila added.
