The City of Cape Town’s Social Development and Early Childhood Development Department (SD&ECD) is taking significant steps to enhance the safety of Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres by providing First Aid training to over 400 practitioners.
Recognising the critical role ECD centres play in the lives of young children, the City is facilitating First Aid Level 1 training for 420 people from various areas across the city.
These participants were selected by their local ECD forums to undergo the two-day training course, which covers essential aspects of First Aid.
The training equips practitioners with the knowledge and skills to assess and manage different types of injuries and common medical emergencies.

Participants also learn how to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), a potentially life-saving technique in emergencies.
In addition to the training, the SD&ECD is distributing first aid kits to all represented ECDs, ensuring that practitioners have the necessary resources for practical application if needed.
Councillor Patricia Van der Ross, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, emphasised the importance of prioritising child safety in ECD centres.
She highlighted the City’s commitment to providing support beyond First Aid training, including guidance on business and financial management and assistance with compliance to facilitate registration with provincial government standards.
By empowering ECD practitioners with first aid skills and resources, the City aims to create safer environments for young children and enhance the overall quality of early learning centres in Cape Town.
