The Western Cape SAPS Provincial Management has expressed their shock after a police officer was shot and killed on Thursday, September 2. According to a police statement, the 35-year-old off-duty Sergeant stationed at Lentegeur SAPS Visible Policing, was allegedly hijacked, shot and fatally wounded in Eersterivier in the early hours of this morning.
Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk says the officer was shot in his neck and was transported to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
“The scene of crime still needs to be established and reconstructed. A murder case has been opened for investigation by the Hawks,” Van Wyk confirmed.
Van Wyk added that anyone with information about this fatal incident that could assist SAPS’ investigation should contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
Meanwhile, an intelligence-driven operation led officers attached to the police’s Anti-Gang Unit to a residence in Gugulethu where they seized two firearms with ammunition and an assortment of large quantities of drugs worth just over a million rands on Wednesday, September 1.
The suspects aged 28 and 32 will appear in court soon on charges of possession of drugs and illegal firearms and ammunition.
