The Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen, has expressed concern following the recent vandalism of three Law Enforcement Advancement Plan (LEAP) vehicles in Hanover Park.
The incident occurred while LEAP officers were apprehending a suspect, leading to an attack by community members in an attempt to disrupt the arrest so the suspect could flee.
‘While LEAP officers were arresting a suspect, it is alleged that certain community members attacked the officers and subsequently damaged their vehicles in an attempt to free the suspect. Although initially successful, he was re-arrested,’ Minister Allen explained.

Minister Allen sternly condemned the actions, noting the disruption they cause to law enforcement and their broader impact on community safety.
‘Unfortunately, these vehicles are now out of commission and unable to be used in crime-fighting efforts in an area where they are much needed,’ he said.
He added that the community members who allegedly participated in the act should ‘know that they have made themselves guilty of interference and obstructed officers of the law in executing their duties.’
Investigations are reportedly underway.
The area of Hanover Park, long troubled by gang-related violence, has seen increased law enforcement presence, with both LEAP officers and additional agencies actively working to curb crime.

The minister called on the community to assist in identifying those involved in the destructive act, underscoring the importance of cooperation between law enforcement and residents in addressing crime.
‘I urge law-abiding community members to provide us with information about who allegedly participated in this lawless act so that they can be arrested. Like all other communities, as the Western Cape Government, we want to rid our areas of gangs and crime to offer our residents safer and more dignified neighbourhoods,’ he said.
Allen praised the resilience and dedication of the LEAP officers.
‘I would like to thank and commend our LEAP officers for their commitment and continued work to make Hanover Park and other communities safer. Despite such challenges, they have shown incredible resilience and fortitude,’ he concluded.
